Our Century

Gold and black glory

Katy Ball, Wolverhampton
Born 1983

"In 1988 I wasn't Wolves greatest fan but within my household three fans already existed and I think that I was slightly bullied into it.

"That year Wolves were in division four and we had got to the final of the Sherpa Van trophy where we played Burnley. Unfortunately this trophy no-longer exists.

"A reported 50,000 or more fans had travelled down to Wembley to watch Wolves win.

"A couple of days later the team were parading through the streets of Wolverhampton showing off their trophy.

"Everyone had gathered in the streets, gold and black was all around me.

"I can remember my mom telling me that it was very important that my sister and I held our flag high so that everyone could admire it.

"We had walked from my home to the Stafford Road where we stood with hundreds of others, awaiting the arrival the team. I was so small that I can remember my dad putting me on his shoulders so I could see.

"As the bus gradually proceeded up Stafford Road the crowd started applauding and chanting.

"All the players were standing on top of the bus waving to the fans.

"As the bus passed me I got a glimpse of the trophy that Graham Turner was holding high above his head.

"We then moved on to Tettenhall to await the arrival of the team for the second time. Once wasn't enough for my dad!

"Wolves have been very close to winning more trophies. Maybe one day . . ."
